The International Musician is the pre-eminent source of listings of
orchestral openings in the U.S. and Canada. Only U.S. orchestras with
AFM collective bargaining agreements can advertise there. This includes
every major and regional U.S. and Canadian orchestra except the Seattle
and Tucson Symphonies. The latter two are members of the International
Guild of Symphony, Opera, and Ballet musicians (IGSOBM), an organization
started by the Seattle Musicians when they split from the AFM a bit more
than twenty years ago. I have seen Seattle and Tucson listings on the
bulletin board at rehearsal, so I presume they get around their lack of
access to the IM by sending them to the personnel managers of other
professional orchestras. They may also submit listings to
conservatories and music schools.
The AFM also has a members-only service on their web site with current audition listings. There are publications out there with openings in European orchestras. Brass Bulletin and Das Orchester come to mind. The latter has a web site: schott-music.com/orchester/ |
